This is, of course, a good point. The tasks at hand are daunting, but what else do we have to do with our time? The name of the game has always been survival and we humans have always used our cleverness toward that end. The only difference now is that rather than outsmarting the fox or the village over the hill, we have to outsmart ourselves and overcome the outcomes of our own cleaver solutions. Survival is about adaptation and we don't set the context for that. Our context is dependence on fossil fuels. Without them, "modern" life will quickly collapse and many people will die. The game, then, is to find alternatives. It's a fun challenge once you get into it. The alternative is to go to continually more extreme and bizarre measures to ignore the problem.

Uh, simple in theory, maybe. Reinventing the way food is produced for half the world should provide some amusement.

From Toilets vs Life as We Know It:

"A human needs to consume about 1.5 pounds of phosphorus per year to live. This is also the amount that is needed to grow our food. "
